educational resource, but a great place to socialize!
However, not unlike a huge city, we must learn to be “street
smart” and protect ourselves when online. Think of the world
wide web as a giant metropolitian area you’re visiting. Take
the steps to protect yourself so that you’ll have the safest
and most enjoyable experience possible.
The Curse of “TMI” (Too much information)
How much/what is too much?
Leaving cell phone numbers in away messages
Leaving other identifying material in away
messages, such as “Gone to the movies, be back around 11:00”)
MySpace Photos ~ The danger of students posting
photos in their “team shirt” or hat, which will undoubtedly
identify to a predator, where the child goes to school.
Using identifying factors as a screen name, ie
first name, last name, etc.
What should not be shared:
Names, addresses, school, photos, phone
numbers, place of employment or other “hangouts”
Warning Signs:
Someone asking for “ASL” (age, sex, location)
Asks to send or receive pics
Tries to meet in person
Asks that the relationship/friendship be kept
secret
Wants to send gifts or cards
Conversations start becoming sexual in nature
or make YOU feel uncomfortable.
Stress the importance of listening to that “6th
sense”…that “gut feeling.”
What to Do:
Tell the person to STOP
Tell a trusted adult
Document everything (save/copy/paste/print)
Contact police
Contact the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force
Contact National Center for Missing & Exploited
Children

Be safe:
Keep your Myspace profile PRIVATE
Take the additional steps and demand that
someone who “friend requests” you must know your email address
or last name.
Do not LIE about your age. It is dangerous and
will inevitably invite unwanted friend requests and
friendships.
If you MUST post photos on Myspace, do not post
anything personal and REFRAIN from using a personal photo as
your default photo. Even if your profile is private, people
can still see that default photo!
Alternatives/Ideas? An animal, a favorite car,
a cartoon character, TV show/movie, sport or celebrity, etc.
