National Data on Sexual Violence - Adult Victims
  • 1.3 Adult women are raped every minute (National Victim Center and Crime Victim Research and Treatment Center, 1992)
  • In 84% of these cases, the attacker knows the victim. This is known as acquaintance rape. 41% of sexual assaults occur in the victim’s home (National Victim Center, 1992; U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1991).
  • The U.S. has the highest rate of sexual assault per capita of any industrialized country. (1990 U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee)
  • American women are 8 times more likely to be raped than European women and 26 more likely than Japanese women (Senate Judiciary Committee Report on Sexual Assault, 1991).
  • Between 1995 and 1996, more that 670,00 women were victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault (U.S Department of Justice, National Crime Victimization Survey, 1997)
